What’s Included in Residential Sprinkler Winterization
For most homes, winterization takes about an hour. We start with a walk-through of your system and set the controller to its off-season mode so it can’t run during freezing weather. Then we blow out each zone individually with compressed air, matching the pressure to the head type on that zone. Rotors, spray heads and drip irrigation lines each need different handling.
Next, we drain the backflow preventer, one of the most freeze-vulnerable parts of any system. If its location calls for it, we’ll advise on insulation or a cover. Finally, we confirm the irrigation main shutoff is fully closed. Before we leave, we tell you about anything we noticed, such as a worn valve or a head that needs replacing. You can then plan irrigation repairs before spring instead of discovering them when you turn the water back on.

When to Winterize Your Sprinkler System
The best window in our region is mid-October through mid-November, before the first sustained hard freeze. Our region often has mild afternoons followed by hard overnight freezes, so a system that survives one cold snap can still fail on the next. Colder, higher-elevation areas such as Frederick County and western Howard County are best scheduled early in that window. Fall is our busiest season, so book early to get the date you want.
