Protect your lawn’s health by checking these common places for irrigation leaks.
Repairing leaks is a critical part of maintaining your property. While most people focus on indoor leaks and maintain all plumbing fixtures in excellent shape, inspecting your outdoor irrigation system for leaks is just as important. Unfortunately, these leaks waste water, are expensive, and can even contribute to the ill-health of your lawn if it is being overwatered, underwatered, or unevenly watered due to an irrigation leak. Protect your lawn’s health by checking these common places for irrigation leaks.
Inspect Your Backflow Devices
Backflow devices require annual inspections to maintain prime irrigation function. They commonly leak when something clogs one of the check valves, such as a rock. To repair these irrigation leaks, you will need to refer to the instruction manual for your specific type of backflow device. Therefore, make sure to shut off the water before you start repairing any irrigation leaks.
Check the Valves
Irrigation valves are also prone to leaks because they occur when something becomes caught in the valve diaphragm. For instance, rocks can develop holes in the diaphragm, causing the irrigation valve to leak or making it impossible to turn off. Fortunately, this type of irrigation leak is easy to repair. Overall, you simply must buy a replacement diaphragm.
Look at the Sprinkler Heads
If your sprinkler heads leak after the irrigation system turns off, inspect their placement first. Sprinkler heads placed on the bottom of a slope often leak, even after the irrigation system is shut off. This happens because any additional water left in the irrigation lines drains out of the lowest point in the whole system. However, this irrigation leak issue can be easily fixed by placing check valves on those sprinkler heads. Some spray head models permit these to be added easily. If your current sprinkler heads do not, you will have to replace the complete sprinkler head body.
