The Hazards of Hanging Holiday Lights

Professional Holiday Lighting

Don’t end up in the hospital for Christmas. Let us help you hang your lights!

Lights are a fundamental part of making your home festive and bright. They bring cheer, warmth, color, and make any home pop as the dreary winter takes hold. While they can add the perfect touch to any celebrations, it is important to take the time to educate yourself on Holiday lighting hazards, so you can enjoy Christmas lights safely. You may even want to consider professional holiday lighting.  Take these tips into account as you begin to decorate your home.

Make Sure Your Lights Are Safety Rated

Verifying the safety rating of your lights is incredibly important. Bargain lights may be seductively low-cost, but can also be a massive fire hazard. Only use lights that have been tested and graded by Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) or Intertek (ETL Semko). Lights with a safety rating display them clearly on their packaging and have approved labels attached to their electrical cords.

Check The Condition Of The Lights

Be sure to make sure your lights are not frayed, or otherwise in poor condition, especially if you are reusing them. Hanging lights with damaged cords can lead to safety hazards such as electrical shorts and even fires.

Only Use Lights As Directed

Follow the directions. Make sure you are using the proper lights in the proper environment. Do not use indoor lights outdoors, and outdoor lights indoors. Using them as directed promises your holiday display will be both safe and beautiful. It is important to uphold professional standards for your safety.

Be Smart About Where You Hang Christmas Lights

Avoid hanging them in areas which would cause safety hazards. Hanging them too close to candles, space heaters, and fireplaces can cause a fire hazard. Keep the lights out of contact with common household materials which are flammable, such as loose paper, curtains, and cloth.

Hang Them Carefully

Never try to cut corners when hanging your lights. Using things such as tacks, staples, or nails is not recommended. Instead, use insulated holders designed specifically for Christmas lights. These will help you avoid a number of holiday lighting hazards.

Turn Lights Off When Your House Is Unattended

If your home will be empty for an extended period, or everyone is asleep, turn off the lights. Should a problem develop with the light display, it is important that someone is readily available to take care of it before it gets out of hand.
