It’s time to start decorating your home and yard for Halloween!

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s time to start decorating your home and yard for the holiday! With the right outdoor lighting, your yard won’t even need any other decorations to look spooky for trick-or-treaters. Here are some tips on how to light up your yard in clever ways to scare any visitors this Halloween.

Using Shadows

With a simple trick, you can create the illusion of vast, deformed shadows that will frighten all trick-or-treaters walking past. Simply place lights low to the ground and aim them slightly upward. This angle will make elongated shadows of anyone or anything that passes in front of the light.

Dark Colors

If you want more of a fun look to your yard, black and orange lights are a Halloween classic that everyone will love. However, if you want something with a dramatic and mystical effect, try dark blue lights. Hang dark blue bulbs in your porch lights to transform your porch into a creepy dungeon, and use dark blue floodlights to make your front yard look like it’s in a moonlight scene in a scary movie. If you’ll be adding other decorations as well, this lighting is also perfect for a graveyard display.

Fire

Fire is another great way to create a scary ambiance- but always be careful that open flames are positioned safely and will not be a hazard to people passing by. Flickering orange lights tend to deepen nearby shadows and make them move and shift, creating a spooky illusion. The classic route is to use a candle inside a jack-o’-lantern, but when used in the right lighting, it can also cast some terrifying shadows.

Fog Machine

Get the scariest possible Halloween lighting on the block with a fog machine. When the fog is covering your yard, flashing and moving lights signify that mysterious spirits are lurking around, ready to jump out at any moment. Create cool effects with track lighting on the ground, so the color will be reflecting and look as though it’s spreading around the fog. Red lights will signify blood, while bright green lights will make your yard look radioactive and poisonous.
