If your basement flooded there are some important things you should know, but most importantly, don’t enter a flooded area until you are told it is safe to do so by a trained professional.
Entering a wet basement can cause problems for you and your family such as:
- Electrical shock
- Gas leaks
- Pollutants
- Chemicals
- Structural damage to your home
Once you realize the basement is flooded, call a plumber immediately to clean up the mess. Also call your insurance company because they will advise you on any standard cleanup procedures.
Take a lot of photos and document the incident for your insurance company.
During clean up, wear protective clothing and beware of electrical equipment that may have been damaged. Also, open windows and add fans to the area to quickly dry out the space.
- Consider storing items in watertight containers, and keeping things raised off the floor.
- Consider changing or upgrading your foundation drainage system.
- Consider a sump pump and/or a backwater sanitary valve.
