Signs that You May Need a Drainage System

Works on houseWater accumulation in your home, on your lawn, or just about anywhere is problematic; water damage is expensive and difficult to reverse. Making sure that your home has a proper drainage system can help you to avoid expensive repairs and hassle if your home floods. But how do you know that you have a drainage problem before your basement actually floods? Your home may be giving you more tip-offs than you realize that you need to either install a new drainage system or improve upon the one that you already have.

Drainage Problem Cues

  • Lawn puddles are occurring – Did you know that too much water is really bad for your lawn? If it cannot absorb all of the water and use it, it can actually cause your grass to mold or die. Puddles will start to form on your lawn after heavy rain if there is nowhere else for the water to go. When you have a drainage system installed, the puddles should stop occurring, leaving you with a healthy yard and no fear of your home flooding. Additionally, if you use a French drain, it will not detract from the aesthetics of your landscaping.
  • Gutter flooding – If your gutters start to back up with water, it is because there usually is not enough of a drainage system at the bottom of your downspout. Gutters that are full of water can be dangerous for your roof and cause flooding on y our property as well. Not only will you likely be dealing with exterior damage, but you might also be dealing with water damage in your home.
  • Water is pooling on your driveway – Water won’t only pool in your yard, but will also pool on your driveway. If the water is coming up to your ankles, it means that there isn’t anywhere for the water to go. You need to make sure that there is sufficient drainage off your lawn as well as off your driveway so that the water makes it into your city or town’s drainage system.
