It is important to find drainage problems when they are smaller and they are easier to fix. Doing so can save you thousands of dollars and spare you a headache. Here are some early signs you should look out for.
Gushing Gutters
Typically, if your gutter is overflowing with water, it means that debris of some kind is blocking the flow. However, there are other, more subtle details to look out for. For example, streaks of dirt on the outside of your gutters, paint peeling off the house in vertical strips, or mud spattered on the siding of your house are all signs to look out for. Not addressing this problem can cause damage to siding, paint jobs, and could potentially cause structural damage.
Water Stains in Basement
Water stains can be caused for a number of reasons, but if you notice that the stain is starting to form a line around the basement, then you are looking at a larger problem. Worst case scenario, the water stain is caused by a fluctuating water table, or the basement floor lies below storm drains that back up when it rains heavily.
Foundational Cracks
While most cracks in the foundation are harmless, it is important to look for bigger cracks in the foundation of your house. A good rule of thumb is making sure the cracks are no larger than ⅛-inch wide. If they are, drainage problems may be damaging the foundation.
You Find Mildew in the Attic
This seems like an odd place to look for a drainage issue, but spotting mildew in your attic could be a clue to potential drainage problems. It could mean that moisture is rising through the house from the basement. It is important to find where the moisture is coming from, and take action from there.
Your Mulch is Moving
It is important to make sure that your soil is able to drain properly. If not, when it rains, it will carry mulch to places where it shouldn’t be. As a result, you will possibly need to redirect the water, and you could be facing problems with your patio such as cracks and popped stones.
